First baseman Sarah Allison went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Sam Houston as the Kats handed Abilene Christian a 7-4 softball loss Saturday.
The victory gives the Bearkats a series win after the two teams split in a doubleheader Friday. Sam Houston stands 24-20 for the year and 13-7 in league action. Abilene Christian drops to 18-24.
Sam Houston stands tied for second place in the Southland Conference with Lamar, two games behind McNeese State in the standings.
Abilene Christian took advantage of two Bearkat errors to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Allison's two-run single in the bottom of the inning tied the game 2-2 after one.
The two teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Kats exploded for five runs. The go-ahead run came on a squeeze bunt by designated player Hillary Adams that scored right fielder Cecilia Castillo from third. The RBI ties Adams for second in career runs batted in with 107 in her career.
Allison and pinch hitter Tori Koerselman also brought in runs with hits and another scored on an error.
The Wildcats threatened in the top of the seventh inning, scoring twice but it was not enough.
Shelby Lancaster faced 31 batters in seven innings, striking out three, to pick up the win in the circle. Lancaster is now 9-6 for the year and 8-1 in Southland play.
Sam Houston takes on Texas Southern in a non-conference doubleheader in Houston Wednesday night then travels to face A&M-Corpus Christi in a Southland series Saturday and Sunday. The Bearkats will wrap up the Southland regular season Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4, with a series with Stephen F. Austin.
