The Sam Houston men's and women's track & field programs took to San Antonio for the final tune-up of the outdoor season capturing 10 personal bests and 23 top three finishes on Saturday.
However, the biggest storyline of the weekend took place out west, as Alyssa Dooley seized a school record of 4:26.06 in the 1500 meter dash at the famed Mt. SAC Relays. The senior's posted time placed her 22nd out of 147 of the country's top competitors.
Meanwhile, in the 1500 back in San Antonio, Nicole Aponte captured a personal best of 4:44.82 in second place marking the sophomore's second consecutive runner-up finish.
The Kats took several top spots in the Alamo City including Sabrina Starr (13.35) and Danielle Demas (13.69) taking first and second in the 100 meter hurdles respectively.
In the women's hammer throw, Adrienne Quillin continued her hot streak in a first place finish (192 ft. 7 inches) followed by Ashley Jenkins in second (173 ft. 3 inches) and a personal best from Taryn Dyess (138 ft. 3 inches) in eighth.
On the men's side, Brek Christensen secured his best 2014 outdoor mark in the hammer throw at 198 ft. 5 inches in one of four SHSU first place finishes on the day.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Ruth Amaku captured first at 1:00.94 followed by Danielle Demas's PR of 1:03.54 in fifth and Alexandria Kimble's ninth place finish at 1:05.43.
The Kats took 2-3-4 in the 3000 meter run including Karl Schreiber (8:47.01), Ryan Saam (8:48.98) and Palo Ponce (8:51.84) while Olivia Olguin took third for the women at 10:32.98.
Sam Houston was well represented in the steeplechase with Ana Moreno securing a personal best (11:37.11) in a second place finish on the women's side while Evan Arambula also finished runner-up (9:56.79) followed by Logan Terry (10:01.95) and Patrick Pitts (10:15.15).
Both 4x100 relay squads would take second with the tandem of Sabrina Starr, Danielle Demas, Elizabeth Ene and Winnie Ileso taking a season best time of 46.89 and Torrance Williams, Kristen Mitchell, Rodney Jones and Jarrick Wright in a time of 40.83.
Lygia Foreman continued her standout season in the 400 meter dash with a second place finisher and time of 54.88 while Katelyn Wynn and Kara Whitson each vaulted 12 ft. 1.5 inches in a tie for second.
Meanwhile, freshman Alfred Pinkney and sophomore Andre Moseley made their Bearkat debuts with action in the high jump. The duo would tie for fourth each with marks of 6 ft. 4.75 inches.
The women's shot put saw six SHSU women in competition highlighted by Kristine Hanks' third place mark of 36 ft. 7.50 inches and a personal best from Frances Porter (35 ft. 1 inch) in eighth. Hanks' solid day would continue with a sixth place finisher in the discus (121 ft. 9 inches) and was followed teammate Elizabeth Lyssy (107 ft. 3 inches) in seventh.
De'Quad Binder also put forth a day to remember capturing a PR of 1:52.03 in the 800 meter run. The sophomore's time was good enough for fifth place – his fourth top five finish in five races this outdoor season.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth Lyssy and Charles White cracked the top three in the javelin throw (132 ft. 5 inches) and triple jump (48 ft. 3.25 inches) respectively. For White, it would be his best mark of his outdoor season.
In other notable fourth place finishes, Garrett Rose vaulted a height of 15 ft. 1 ¾ inches, Nicole Jenrette peaked at 5 ft. 3 inches in the high jump, Dedrick Brooks ran a time of 48.93 in the 400 meter dash and Khalaya Williams at 38 ft. ¼ in the triple jump.
Simon Imagbe led all Bearkat competitors in fifth with a distance of 22 ft. 7 ¼ inches in the long jump. Another noteworthy performance in the event included Chris Jefferson's best mark of his outdoor season with a distance of 21 ft. ¾ inches in tenth.
The Bearkats were busy in the women's long jump with six competitors in action. SHSU was led by Kaylynne Wright (18 ft. 7 ¼ inches) in second, Winnie Ileso in third (18 ft. 7 inches), Allyson Pettit in sixth (18 ft. 2 ¼ inches) and Khalaya Williams in seventh (18 ft. ¼ inches) to round out the top ten.
Other Bearkat PR's included Justin Jenkins in the 100 meter dash (10.78) and Jay Roberson in the discus (108 ft. 11 inches).
The Kats will spend the next three weeks making any final adjustments for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships which will take place May 9-11 in Conway, Ark.
