Simms complete game leads Kats to 2-1 win

Jason Simms allowed just one run in nine innings on the mound to lead the Sam Houston baseball team to a 2-1 win over Oral Roberts. Sunday's game will be huge for a Bearkat team that is looking for its second series win in league play.

Third baseman Carter Burgess was the offensive catalyst for Sam Houston. The junior from Houston led off the seventh inning with a single and scored on a pinch-hit single by Ryan Farney. Then in the top of the ninth he led off with a double and scored on a base hit by designated hitter Dylan Ebbs.

Simms was making just the third start of his career and it was by far his best effort. The senior allowed a first-inning run and nothing after. He struck out six batters and walked just one, the first batter of the game.

Center fielder Colt Atwood kept the first-inning damage to just one run when he gunned down a runner at the plate to end the frame.

The Golden Eagles had singles in each of the first five innings but Simms wouldn't allow a single base runner in the final four innings of the ballgame.

The Kats were shut down for six innings by ORU starter Guilermo Trujillo. The Kats finally got to him in the seventh and chased him from the game with the score tied 1-1. Reliever Jordan Romano retired the first four batters he faced until Burgess' double in the ninth.

Dirk Masters will take the hill for the Bearkats in Sunday's massive rubber match. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
