Women Sweep Southland With Outdoor Title
5/11/2014 7:41:00 PM | Women's Track & Field
The Sam Houston women's track & field squad used seven top three performances and 176 points to claim the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships while sweeping the indoor and outdoor titles for the first time since the 2008 season.
In the process, the Bearkats halted rival Stephen F. Austin's streak of five outdoor consecutive championship wins, outscoring the Lumberjacks by 44 points.
Entering the day, SHSU had put itself in position for 12 point opportunities and the Kats took advantage.
In the high jump, Nicole Jenrette captured a lifetime best of 5 feet, 8 ½ inches in a second place finish while boosting the Sam point total by 10 one day after taking third in the heptathlon.
“I wanted to do well for my team and my mom,” Jenrette said. “It's Mother's Day and I'm from New Mexico so they couldn't make it. It was a great weekend. I was tired coming in, those two days were rough but you've got to do what you've got to do for your team.”
In the women's triple jump, Kaylynne Wright put on a show. The junior's leap of 40 feet, 11 ¾ inches was a personal best and good enough for second place overall.
The Kats captured third in the 4x100-meter relay as the quartet of Kristian Austin, Elizabeth Ene, Danielle Demas and Winnie Ileso hit a time of 45.85.
"It's really exciting because we haven't won indoor and outdoor since 2008," Starr said of the championship. "Knowing that Alyssa (Dooley) was a senior we had to do it for her as well."
Dooley was a big favorite heading into the 1,500-meter relay run and did not disappoint. The redshirt senior won the event going away at 4:28.71, nearly three seconds ahead of the second place competitor.
"Consistency is probably the most important quality to have in running," Dooley said. "I base my training all off of that. I want to make sure I feel good during workouts and races. You have to be a competitor."
In the women's 100-meter hurdles, as they've done so many times before, senior Sabrina Starr and Danielle Demas went 1-2 with times of 13.19 and 13.36 respectively. Starr's mark of 13.19 was a personal best in what has been a storied career.
"We knew that we had to go 1-2 to win to get the points we needed," Starr said. "I was really nervous about it because I knew if I didn't do my best I wasn't going to win. Being a senior I wanted to do that."
Lygia Foreman would finish in a tie for the meet's high point scorer with 20.5 points. Foreman captured first place in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 23.97 tallying 10 points in the process and helping the Bearkats begin to pull away. Paula Smith came in sixth in the event at 24.40.
Foreman would add to her outstanding weekend with a second place finisher in the 400-meter dash. The junior has now finished top three in the event each of the last four Southland Conference Championships.
Three Bearkats were finals qualifiers in the 800-meter dash including Alyssa Dooley, Brianna McCall and Nicole Aponte. The trio would finished 5-6-7 led by McCall (2:14.24) who was followed by Dooley (2:15.64) and Aptone (2:16.73).
SHSU would also go in order in the 400-meter dash taking 4-5-6 led by Ruth Amaku (1:00.03) followed by Alexandria Kimble (1:02.56) and Danielle Demas (1:02.64).
Other notables included three SHSU athletes taking part in the shot put finals. The Kats were led by Kristine Hanks (46 feet, ½ inch) in fifth, Adrienne Quillin (43 feet, ¼ inch) in eighth and Ashley Jenkins in 12th (42 feet, 2 ¼ inch).
With the championship in hand, the quarter of Ruth Amaku, Jordan Grady, Alexandria Kimble and Lygia Foreman overwhelming took control of the 4x400-meter relay with a first place time of 3:41.08.
For senior Alyssa Dooley, it was a moment that could not come soon enough.
"I'm stoked right now," Dooley said. "I didn't run indoor so I wasn't a part of the championship indoors. I've been here five years but never won a championship. This is just a really exciting way to finish my running career at Sam."
