
Kats Take Coach, Freshman Honors

Sam Houston State track & field coach David Self earned Southland Conference women's coach of the year and Olivia Olguin was named female freshman of the year, the league announced Thursday.
Self's squad captured back-to-back Southland Conference championships including a 176-point performance at the outdoor championships in Conway, Ark. over the weekend.
For Olguin, the award comes after two top-five performances at the outdoor meet highlighted by a second place school-record time of 37:10.21 in the 10,000-meter run and fourth place mark of 18:20.63 in the 5,000-meter run.
The women also picked up a league-leading 19 all-conference accolades including eight first-team selections, five second-team and six third-team.
Bearkats earning dual honors included Lygia Foreman in the 200-meter dash (first-team) and the 400-meter dash (second-team); Nicole Jenrette in the high jump (second-team) and heptathlon (third-team) and Danielle Demas in the 100-meter hurdles (second-team) and 4x100-meter relay (third-team).
Other first-team accolades were awarded to Sabrina Starr (100-meter hurdles), Alyssa Dooley (1,500-meter run), Kara Whitson (pole vault), and Adrienne Quillin (hammer throw) along with the trio of Ruth Amaku, Jordan Grady and Alexandria Kimble in the 4x400-meter relay.
Taking home second-team honors were Olguin in the 10,000-meter run and Kaylynne Wright in the triple jump.
Ashley Jenkins (hammer throw) was named third team all-conference as were 4x100-meter relay members Kristian Austin, Elizabeth Ene and Winnie Ileso.
