
NCAA West Preliminary Action Begins Thursday

NCAA WEST PRELIMINARY LIVE RESULTS
Eight of the 15 student-athletes representing Sam Houston in the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Championships will see action Thursday on the meet's first day.
The West region preliminary round will be held at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The qualifiers out of these regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.
Jay Roberson will get things started for the Bearkats in the men's pole vault at 1 p.m. Thursday. The freshman ranks 41st nationally in the pole vault with his mark of 16' 1.75” at the Southland Conference championships in Conway.
Southland women's pole vault champion Kara Whitson begins competition at 6:30 p.m. Whitson earned her spot in the preliminary round with a 13' 1.5” vault at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin. She stands 35th in the national women's rankings.
Jarrick Wright and Justin Jenkins open action for the Bearkats on the track in the men's 100 meter dash at 6:30 p.m. Wright ranks 23rd nationally with a 10.40 clocking and Jenkins stands one-hundred second back at 25th with a 10.41 best time.
Also starting competition at 6:30 p.m. is Charles White in the long jump. White owns a best mark of 24' 4.25” to stand 44th nationally.
Rodney Jones stand 15th in the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 46.31. The event begins at 7:20 p.m. Thursday.
Lygia Foreman, runner-up at the Southland Conference in the 400 meter dash, competes at 7:45 p.m. Foreman posted a season best 53.89 time at the conference meet.
De'Quad Binder wraps up SHSU's Thursday action in the 800 meters where he ranks 33rd in the nation with a time of 1:49.80.
In order to advance to the finals in Oregon, competitors must finish among the top 12 in their individual event.
Since the NCAA preliminary rounds were instituted in 2010, three Bearkats have advanced to the finals through preliminary competition.
Chris Cralle won the West preliminary hammer throw in 2011 and went on to earn All-America honors with a seventh place national finish.
Last year, White advanced to the finals with a 12th place finish in the triple jump. He finished 22nd at the national finals.
The SHSU 4x400 relays of Trey Jones, Brian Hellaire, Jesse Martinez and D. J. Hayes finished 10th in the West and placed 20th at the national finals.
