Two Bearkat women advance from prelims

Danielle Demas and Sabrina Starr from Sam Houston have advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals in the 100 meter hurdles after outstanding performances in the prelims Friday at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Demas placed ninth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.60, just 0.24 seconds off her season best time of 13.36 than earned her a berth in the NCAA West meet. Her performance Friday ranks as the fourth fastest time in the event in SHSU women's track history.
Starr, the 2014 Southland Conference 100 meter hurdles champion, finished 18th in the prelims with a mark of 13.77. Starr earned All-America honors in March after reaching the NCAA National Indoor Championships in the 60 meter hurdles.
The NCAA quarterfinals which will decide who advances to the national championships in Eugene, Oregon, in the 100 meter hurdles will be held Saturday at 7:20 p.m.
In other women's action Friday for Sam Houston, Kaylynne Wright placed 42nd in the triple jump with a mark of 37' 6.75”. Wright hit her mark on her first attempt. She fouled on her second jump and went 37' 6.5” inches on her final attempt.
The qualifiers out of the West region will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.
In order to advance to the finals in Oregon, competitors must finish among the top 12 in their individual event.
Thursday in the first day of action at the NCAA West meet, the Bearkats' Lygia Foreman placed 39th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.96. Southland women's pole vault champion Kara Whitson cleared the bar at 12' 3.25” on her second attempt but missed in all three tries at 12' 9”.
Besides the 100 meter hurdles competition Saturday, Ashley Jenkins and Adrienne Quillin of Sam Houston will compete in the women's hammer throw at 10 a.m.
Since the NCAA preliminary rounds were instituted in 2010, three Bearkats have advanced to the finals through preliminary competition.
