The Sam Houston men's and women's track & field programs aced their final tests of the outdoor season breaking three school records and recording several peak performances at the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday.
In the women's hammer, Ashley Jenkins inked her name into the SHSU record books with a throw of 199 ft. 9 inches, good enough to move the sophomore into the top 20 nationally in her category.
After a season of dominating the 1500 meter dash, Alyssa Dooley carried her hot streak over to the 800 where the senior secured a school record time of 2:10.01 in a sixth place finisher.
On the men's side, De'Quad Binder's time of 1:49.80 in the 800 meters was a school record, a personal best of more than two seconds and the sophomore's fifth top five finish of the outdoor slate.
Lygia Foreman and Rodney Jones both raked in huge days at the Invitational with Foreman securing a season best of 54.52 in the 400 meter dash and Jones moving into second in the conference and 25th in the NCAA West Division after running 20.95 in the 200.
Several Kats moved up the Southland Conference performance list including Andre Moseley (6 ft. 8 inches) who is in third in the high jump; Kaylynne Wright (39 ft. 3.25 inches) grabbing third in the triple jump as well as Kara Whitson (13 ft. 1.25 inches) and Katelyn Wynn (12 ft. 7.25 inches) who rank first and fourth respectively in the pole vault.
Danielle Demas continued her impressive season running a time of 13.36 in the 100 meter hurdles moving into 27th nationally and served as the third leg of the women's 4x400 relay squad that took fifth place at 46.60.
Charles White also moved up the national ranks, coming in at 37th in the West after a leap of 24 ft. 4.25 inches in a third place long jump finisher.
In the men's 3000 meter run, the Kats went 3-4-5 led by Palo Ponce (8:48.98), Daniel Jones (8:52.43) and Ryan Saam (8:54.74).
Senior Brek Christensen added some final touches to his stellar Bearkat career in a second place finish and distance of 197 ft. 6 inches in the hammer.
Other notables included a third place finish (194 ft. 3 inches) from Adrienne Quillin in the hammer; a fourth place mark of 10:41.62 from freshman Ana Moreno in the 3000 and second place finisher (40.56) by the men's 4x100 squad.
The Bearkat men would put up 78.50 points in the scored meet – good enough for fourth amongst 14 teams – while the women tallied 63 points to take fifth.
The squads will make final preparations early this week as they head to Conway, Ark. to compete in the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships from Friday, May 9 through Sunday, May 11.
