Women Lead Outdoor Championships After Day One
5/9/2014 10:19:00 PM | Women's Track & Field
The Sam Houston women's track & field squad got off to the right start tallying 39 points to remain in first place after a rain-soaked day one of the Southland Conference Championships from Conway, Ark. on Friday.
Through three complete events the Bearkats maintain a 20-point lead over Southeastern Louisiana (19) who is followed by Stephen F. Austin (11).
After the day's four heptathlon events, SHSU's Nicole Jenrette leads all competitors with 3,044 points while teammate Allyson Pettit sits in fourth at 2,891 and Frances Porter secured 2,661 points in 11th place.
The event saw personal bests from Jenrette (14.59) in the 100-meter hurdles and Porter in the 100-meter hurdles (15.46) and the high jump (4 feet, 8 ¾ inches).
Three events remain in the heptathlon with the long jump slated for 11 a.m. tomorrow, the javelin throw at 12:15 p.m. and the 800-meter dash at 1:45.
The Kats remained dominate on the day with Adrienne Quillin winning the hammer throw on a toss of 184 feet while teammate Ashley Jenkins captured third at 182 feet, 4 inches.
“Coming into it, I knew I had a big challenge and we were going to come in and compete,” Quillin said. “We did the best we best we could given the conditions. It affected our performances a bit with the distance but we throw in the rain all the time in Huntsville so it wasn't anything new.”
In the pole vault, Kara Whitson secured a big day taking first place with a mark of 12 feet, 10 inches. It would be the junior's second highest collegiate mark. Junior Katelyn Wynn and sophomore Ashley Thompson would also get into the action in a tie for seventh at 11 feet, 8 inches.
In the day's final event, freshman Olivia Olguin used a surge down the stretch, crushing the school record in the process to finish second (37.10.21) in the grueling 10,000-meter run. Olguin was followed closely by teammate Ana Moreno in fifth at (37:58.76).
“On our recovery runs, where we are supposed to run a bit slower, I run faster instead,” Olguin said of her training. “I don't have a slower pace which prepares you for these long races. I was making sure I felt good, felt strong and saved a little bit of energy to have a kick in the end.”
The action picks back up tomorrow with the conclusion of the heptathlon followed by the field events at 3 p.m. and the preliminary running events at 5 p.m. Fans can follow live on the official Southland website or along at Twitter.com/BearkatSports.
