Two Bearkats Named Academic All-Southland

Second baseman Alyssa Coggins and right-handed pitcher Shelby Lancaster of Sam Houston have been named to the 2014 Academic All-Southland Conference honor squad.
Coggins, a graduate student from Sealy, is a three-time Academic All-Southland honoree. The four-year letterwinner earned 2014 Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District VII honors with her perfect 4.00 grade point average (GPA) in business administration. She earned her bachelor's degree in business with a 3.76 overall GPA.
Coggins started every game (219) at second base during her career at Sam Houston. She hit .274 this season and produced a .970 fielding average with only 9 errors in 304 chances in 2014. She holds the SHSU record for most career assists (502) and ranks fourth all-time in games played as a Bearkat (219)
Lancaster, a senior from Tomball, has produced a 3.44 overall GPA as a kinesiology major. She helped lead the Bearkat pitching staff this year with a 2.89 earned run average in 153 innings of action. Lancaster was a third team All-Southland Conference selection. She was voted as Southland Pitcher of the Week March 31.
A two-time Academic All-Southland selection, Lancaster compiled 1.76 ERA and 9-4 record in Southland Conference play and led the team in ERA, complete games (12), innings pitched and strike outs.
The academic all-Southland team is voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
