Sam Houston State pitcher Sam Odom was named to the 2014 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team, selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. The Klein High School product is Sam Houston baseball's first freshman All-American.
Odom is the Bearkats' first 10-game winner since Jacob Howard went 11-6 in 2007. The right-hander is the first Bearkat freshman to ever win 10 or more games and is just the fifth Sam Houston pitcher to win more than 10 games at the Division I level.
He went 10-2 with a 2.61 earned run average in 16 appearances. Odom made 11 starts and logged a total of 79 1/3 innings on the mound. He struck out 38, while opposing batters managed to hit just .218 off him. Odom made five relief appearances and recorded one save.
His last start came in NCAA Regional play against Siena where he tossed 5 2/3 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out two. He recorded his 10th win as the Kats topped the Saints 9-2.
Odom is one of just five freshman pitchers in the nation with at least 10 wins. He also finishes the season just three wins shy of the national lead.
The team is headlined by Collegiate Baseball's Freshman Pitcher of The Year, RHP Zach Plesac of Ball St. (12-2 with 6 saves and a 2.11 ERA in 25 appearances) and Freshman Player of The Year, second baseman Jake Noll, Florida Gulf Coast (.367, 18 doubles, 29 RBIs, 25 SB).
