Kats report Sunday then begin practice Monday

Ninety-five players report Sunday afternoon as Sam Houston opens preseason camp for its 98th year of football.
Head coach K. C. Keeler and his staff have 49 lettermen in camp who return from SHSU's 2013 squad that rolled up a 9-5 record. The other 46 athletes in camp include redshirts and other squad members, freshmen and transfers.
The Bearkats are one of only three FCS programs that have earned playoff invitations each of the past three years.
Sam Houston won the Southland championship in both 2011 and 2012 and finished third in the league race last season.
With only seven players who started 10 or more games returning Keeler knows there are lots of question marks about this year's Bearkat squad.
“Everyone, players and coaches alike, are excited to get things started,” Keeler said. “We've got a work to do to get ready for the opener at Eastern Washington August 23. Opening the 2014 college football season on ESPN is a terrific reward for all the hard work our players have done coming into camp.”
Sam Houston's first practice will run from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday.
“There's been tremendous enthusiasm this summer with the guys working together,” senior safety Michael Wade said. “We're here to win. The coaching staff and the players are on the same page. We're not just thinking about a conference championship. We looking to do well in the playoffs as well”
The Bearkats open the 2014 season Saturday August 23 with the FCS Kickoff game versus Eastern Washington on ESPN. Sam Houston plays host to Alabama State in its home opener Saturday August 30.
SHSU will host five home contests at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium in 2014. Season tickets for all five home games plus the “Battle of the Piney Woods” at NRG Stadium in Houston Nov. 1 are on sale at the athletic ticket office located in the Ron Mafrige Field House and online at www.gobearkats.com . Fans who purchase season tickets during the first week of preseason camp (July 28 – Aug 1) will be eligible for special prizes including 2 home opener end zone passes (Monday), team autographed poster (Tuesday), 2 Bearkat polos (Wednesday), 2 Piney Woods sidelines passes (Thursday) and K. C. Keeler autographed football (Friday).
