
Wells-Gibson earns another Southland honor

For the fifth time in her career and second time this season, Sam Houston's Deveney Wells-Gibson has been named as Southland Conference volleyball “Offensive Player of the Week.”
The senior from San Antonio totaled 55 kills in three matches to average 5.5 kills per set at the TCU Molten Invitational this weekend in Fort Worth.
Winning 61 points for the Bearkats over the course of the tournament, Wells-Gibson accounted for 6.05 of Sam Houston's 16.58 points per set during the weekend while dishing out 3 blocks, 26 digs and 4 aces.
Her 33 kills in a hard-fought five set, two-and-a-half hour loss to High Point University from North Carolina, Wells-Gibson totaled a career high. The 33 kills were the sixth highest single match total in school history.
Wells-Gibson ranks in the top-25 nationally for attacks per set (12.81), total attacks (615), kills per set (4.54), total kills (218) and points per set (5.03).
The first week of the 2014 season, Wells-Gibson earned Southland Conference player of the week honors after leading Sam Houston to the team championship at the Bearkat Invitational.
The outside hitter is a first team preseason All-Southland selection in 2014 after earning all-league honors both as a sophomore and junior.
Sam Houston opens Southland Conference action this weekend in Beaumont, facing the Lamar Cardinals at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Kats completed pre-conference tournament play with a 7-6 record. The seven victories represent the most wins for an SHSU volleyball team going into their league opener since 1994.
Next home match for the Bearkats will be Thursday, October 9, when the SHSU women take on Incarnate Word in a 6:30 p.m. Southland match at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
