The Bearkats dominated at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Splash cross country meet Friday evening with the SHSU women taking first place and the men third.
The meet was held at West Guth Park in Corpus Christi.
Olivia Olguin, Ana Moreno and Nicole Aponte finished third, fourth and fifth in the women's 5,000 meter race to lead Sam Houston to the team title. Olguin finished just 10 seconds behind race winner Ebony White of the University of Houston. White won with a mark of 17:55 while Olguin cruised in with an 18:05 clocking.
Moreno posted a time of 18:15 and Aponte was two seconds back at 18:17. Other SHSU women's finishes and times were Miranda Prado 13th 19:08 and Nina Gonzales 14th 19:10.
Sam Houston's winning team score was 34. Houston was the runner-up with 43 points followed by host A&M-Corpus Christi 56, Texas-Pan American 102, Texas Southern 151 and Prairie View A&M 159.
Karl Schreiber was the top Bearkat in the men's 8,000 meter race with a 26:16 time for a fourth place finish. Event winner Philipp Baar of A&M-Corpus Christi took first place with a clocking of 25:15.
Other Sam Houston men's finishes and times were Ryan Saam 8th, Grant Buley 15th 26:52, Evan Arambula 16th 26:54, Logan Terry 27th 27:44, Colton Stoker 29th 28:04, Patrick Pitts 30th 28:10 and J. T. Bounds 43rd 29:01.
A&M-Corpus Christi won the men's race with 32 points. Houston was second with 50 points followed by Sam Houston 70, Texas-Pan American 112, Prairie View A&M 137 and Texas Southern 144.
Next action for the Bearkat cross country teams will be a trip to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the Crimson Tide Classic Friday, October 17.
The annual Southland Conference cross country championship meet will be held in Natchitoches, La., on Monday, November 3.
