Robertson leads Kats to 75-59 win at UNO

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Shernise Robertson scored a career-high 26 points to lead Sam Houston State to a 75-59 win over New Orleans on the road Saturday. The win improves the Bearkat women's basketball team to 2-2 in Southland play with a trip to Nicholls State up next.

Robertson was involved in all of the pivotal plays for the Bearkats. She scored the Kats' first points of the game, made a three-pointer at half to tie the game and eventually gave Sam Houston the lead and the win.

The junior transfer from Tyler Junior College nailed a game-tying three-pointer with 39 seconds left in the first half to knot the score 32-32 at halftime. Robertson also made back-to-back treys late in the first half to lead the Bearkats on a 10-3 run to trim a 14-point New Orleans lead.

To open up the second half, she made 2-of-3 free-throws to open the second half. The free-throws gave SHSU its first lead of the game and the Kats would never trail in the second half.

The Bearkats finished with four players scoring in double figures. Shadijah Moore was a force in the paint, scoring 14 points and pulling down seven rebounds. The freshman was extremely efficient, scoring on 7-of-9 field goals.

Taylor Dorsey and Jazmin Wiley each scored 13 points for SHSU. Both players were clutch from the charity with five made free-throws.

The Privateers were led by Jewel Angelo with 12 points while Yasmin Taylor scored 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Sam Houston started the game slowly and trailed by as many as 14 points. Robertson hit a three-pointer on the Bearkats second possession of the game but SHSU managed just one other made basket, a layup by Moore, over the first eight minutes of the first half. Robertson scored 14 points in the first period on 4-of-5 three-pointers.

Wiley was also a big part of the Kats late first-half surge, scoring 11 first-half points including 3-of-4 free-throws down the stretch.

The Kats will be back in the state of Louisiana to take on Nicholls Thursday, Jan. 15 at 6:00 p.m. in Thibodaux.
