Kats go 7-6 in Arkansas St. Mid-Winter Invt.

Sam Houston State ended their first tournament of the 2015 spring semester with a 7-6 record at the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Arkansas, that included victories over four nationally-ranked opponents.
The Bearkats finished 10th in bracket best-of-seven baker play Sunday. The SHSU women also placed 10th overall in the event in total pins with 12,671 for a team average of 189.1.
No. 13-ranked McKendree opened the Kats' bracket action with a five-match 183-162 181-182 226-181 202-188 204-159 loss. The SHSU women bounced back to top No. 20 Tulane in six matches 221-179 279-170 189-190 206-197 191-210 193-189.
No. 7 Wisconsin-Whitewater ended Sam Houston's Sunday with a seven-game loss 233-182 213-150 213-226 202-158 162-174 213-163 loss.
No. 9 Maryland-Eastern shore won the Mid-Winter Invitational tournament championship with a six-game victory over event host No. 3 Arkansas State in the bracket finals.
No. 1 Nebraska won the third place match in seven games over No. 4 Central Missouri. The Cornhuskers produced the tournament's top total pin average with a 205.6 mean.
In the other bracket matches, No. 8 Stephen F. Austin defeated No. 6 Vanderbilt in six games for fifth place; No. 13 McKendree won in six over Alabama-Birmingham for seventh place; No. 20 Tulane defeated No. 15 Valparaiso in four games for 11th place and Louisiana Tech downed Jackson State in six games for 13th place.
The Bearkats' 7-6 mark at the Arkansas State ups Sam Houston's season record to 58-26 in dual match play.
Anna Groce and Janine Kawahara led the Kats in Sam Houston's 10 traditional team matches Friday and Saturday. Groce totaled 2,007 pins in 10 matches for a 200.7 average that ranked 17th among individual totals in the tournament. Kawahara's 1,884 total pins in 10 matches for a 188.4 average stood 32nd.
