Taylor Erwin, a goalkeeper from the University of Arkansas, and Alexis Riggs, a defender from Arkansas State University, have joined the Sam Houston State program, head coach Tom Brown announced this week.
Erwin played in two games for the Razorbacks as a true freshman, before utilizing a redshirt season in 2014. She recorded her first collegiate clean sheet in a 1-0 win against Mississippi State. Erwin also has NCAA Tournament experience, playing in the Razorbacks' third round game against Duke.
The 5'8 shot-stopper was a three-time all-district player and team captain at The Colony High School. She was named the district goalkeeper of the year after her senior season. Erwin played her club soccer for FC Dallas ECNL 95.
Riggs comes to Sam Houston after having started 17-of-18 games as a junior midfielder at Arkansas State. Only one Red Wolves' player started more games than Riggs.
Prior to Arkansas State she attended Navarro College where she earned first-team All-America honors from the NSCAA and was named a third-team NJCAA All-American. Riggs helped lead the team to the 2013-14 XVIV NJCAA championship and the 2013-14 NJCAAA District 7 championship. Her team placed second in the 2013-14 NJCAA National Tournament.
Riggs was a three-time all-district player at Fossil Ridge High School. Her team won district championships in 2011 and 2012 and qualified for the state playoffs. As a freshman, she was selected as the team's offensive MVP.
