Led by Shernise Robertson who totaled 28 points, the Sam Houston women's basketball team rallied from 16 points down to earn a 74-67 Southland Conference victory over Houston Baptist Saturday afternoon at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats upped their season mark to 6-14 and stand 5-5 in Southland Conference play. HBU dropped to 8-12 for the year and 2-7 in the league.
"This was a big win for us," said head coach Brenda Nichols. "To be able to come from behind and win it like that is huge. It gets us back to .500."
Robertson, the league's leading scorer, hit 5-of-10 from the field and 16-of-17 from the line to post her seventh consecutive game with 20 or more points. Taylor Dorsey added 22 for Sam Houston.
"When they are clicking like they they are very good together," Nichols said about the play of Robertson and Dorsey. "We can be a very good when they are playing together like that."
Tayler Jefferson and Anna Strickland led the Huskies with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
Making on two field goals in the first 15 minutes of the first half to hit only 22 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, the Bearkats trailed 36-25 at halftime and were down 44-28 with 16:21 to play.
The Bearkats went on a 10-0 run to cut the margin to 44-38 with 13:36 to play. Dorsey scored the go-ahead basket on a layup with 6:58 to play and the Kats never trailed again.
Sam Houston hit 57.7 per cent in the second half.
