Bearkats compete in Houston Friday

Both the Sam Houston men's and women's track and field teams return to indoor action Friday as the Bearkats compete at the University of Houston Cougar Indoor Opener.
The event will be held at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston on Friday.
Action will begin with the women's weight throw at 9 a.m., and will follow a rolling schedule of events throughout the day. The running events are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., with the prelims of the women's 60m hurdles.
Yeoman Fieldhouse will play host to nine teams from the state of Texas, including Stephen F. Austin, UTSA, Houston Baptist, Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sam Houston State, and Lamar, as well as various club teams from around the area.
Sam Houston opened its track season just before the Christmas break by competing in the Texas A&M Reveille Indoor meet hosted by the Aggies in College Station.
Highlights of the season opener included a school record performance by Kara Whitson in the women's pole vault with a mark of 13' 2.25”. The vault broke a seven-year old SHSU track and field mark.
Jeffrey Moore, a freshman, highlighted men's action at A&M with a first place in the mile run with a time of 4:14.22.
“We're pretty much taking the whole team down to Houston,” SHSU head track and field coach David Self said. “We want to see where we stand in all the events.”
Sam Houston's women are the defending Southland Conference champions in both indoor and outdoor track and field. The Bearkat men were runners-up at the league indoor meet in Birmingham last year.
Next action for the Sam Houston teams will be the Texas A&M 10-Team Invitational in College Station on Friday, January 16.
