The Bearkats, now 10-10 for the year and 4-2 in Southland action, opened their 2015 league schedule with a four-set victory over the Cardinals on Sept. 25.
Madison Wallace, Brooke White and Taylor Cunningham combined for 38 of Sam Houston's 54 kills in the victory. Wallace and White each totaled 14 kills while Cunningham added 10 as the Kats won 25-19, 19-25, 25-22, 25-10.
Last year Lamar and Sam Houston split with the Cards rallying from two sets to none down to win in five in Beaumont and the Kats later avenging the loss with a four-set victory in Huntsville.
The Bearkats split on a trip to West Texas last week, defeating Incarnate Word in three sets 25-22 25-21 26-24 in San Antonio before falling to Abilene Christian in five 25-13 20-25 27-25 26-28 12-15.
Sam Houston is spreading the offense across the front line. Brooke White leads the team with 251 kills, followed by Jordyn Vaughn with 158, Taylor Cunningham with 147, Shelby Genung with 113 and Madison Wallace with 85.
Michelle Griffith ranks among the top setters in the league with 771 assists this season (10.02 per set) while Claire Kilpatrick's total of 313 digs gives the libero a 4.17 per set average.
Lamar fell to both Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian in their road swing last week. Prior to that the Cards stood 2-1 with both wins coming in cozy McDonald Gym. Lamar is 12-7 for the year.
Cortney Moore, who just joined Lamar's 1,000 kill career club, is the team's top offensive threat. The Cardinals' 12 wins this season match the victories from their 2013 and 2014 campaigns combined.
Following Tuesday's action, Sam Houston returns home to host one of the league's front runners in a 2 p.m. matchup with Central Arkansas Saturday at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
