Quarterback Jared Johnson has been voted as Southland Conference football “Offensive Player of the Week” after leading Sam Houston to a 49-21 league victory over Abilene Christian University on the road last Saturday.
The junior signal-caller from Grand Prairie / South Grand Prairie threw touchdown passes of 64, 24, 13, 20 and nine yards as Sam Houston roared out to a 28-0 first quarter lead for the team's fourth consecutive victory.
Johnson was 17 of 24 passing for 250 yards. His 64-yard touchdown pass came on a flea-flicker to LaDarius Brown on the opening drive of the game.
Johnson tied a school record originally set in 1999 by Chris Chaloupka against A&M-Kingsville. The feat has been equaled eight more times – twice more by Chaloupka in 1999, four times by Dustin Long in 2004 and once each by Josh McCown in 2001 and Rhett Bomar in 2008.
Johnson becomes the third Bearkat to earn “Player of the Week” honors this season. Running back Donovan Williams won the offensive award after scoring four touchdowns in the season opener at Texas Tech. Gerald Thomas was the special teams winner after a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown that sparked a come-from-behind victory at NRG Stadium over SFA.
Johnson now leads the Southland Conference in total offense yards per game (229.5) and ranks No. 4 in the Southland Conference in passing yards per contest (182.0).
Sam Houston plays host to Nicholls Saturday at 6 p.m. for 2015 homecoming at Elliott. T. Bowers Stadium. Tickets are available now online at www.gobearkats.com or at the Sam Houston athletic ticket office at (936) 294-1729.
