Stephen F. Austin totaled 13 blocks and committed only 13 attack errors to earn a 25-22 27-25 25-11 straight-set Southland Conference volleyball victory over Sam Houston at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Thursday night.

Brooke White totaled 15 kills in 39 attempts to lead the Bearkats and Jordan Vaughn added nine as the team produced 39 kills. But the Kats committed 29 attack errors in their 129 attempts for a .078 hitting percentage. SFA hit .298.

The Lumberjacks upped their record to 15-11 for the year and 7-3 in Southland action with the win. Sam Houston dropped to 10-13 for the season and 4-5 in league play.

Justice Walker and Makenzee Hanna led the Jacks with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Jacque Allen led the SFA front line with two solo blocks and five block assists.

Michelle Griffith assisted on 31 kills as the Bearkats' setter. Vaughn and libero Claire Kilpatrick each totaled 11 digs. Sam Rodriguez and O J Olson led SFA with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

Sam Houston started strong, jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the opening set. But SFA roared back with a 10-2 run to go up 12-8. The Jacks never trailed in the first again, building a 19-13 lead and holding off a late rally.

The second set was a roller-coaster with 15 ties and eight lead changes. Sam Houston led 22-20 late, but the two teams were tied at 22, 23, 24 and 25 before a kill by Justice Walker and a service ace by Hanna sent the Kats to the locker room down two sets.

Stephen F. Austin kept its foot on the gas in the third set, taking an early lead and never looking back.

Sam Houston returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. against Northwestern State on its home floor.
