Paul Baxter Named Preseason All-Southland

Paul Baxter, a senior guard who has started all but 12 of Sam Houston's 104 games the past three years, is one of five players who have earned Southland Conference men's basketball first team preseason all-league honors.
The preseason team, voted upon by the league's head coaches, was announced Tuesday by the Southland Conference office.
Baxter enters his senior season with career totals of 863 points and 299 assists. The Austin / Bowie High School product has helped lead Sam Houston to a 67-37 record during his three years as a Bearkat.
"Paul certainly is deserving of this honor," Sam Houston head coach Jason Hooten said. "He's been a big part of our success the past three years and we certainly are counting upon him for leadership this season."
Joining Baxter on the preseason all-conference first team are Thomas Walkup of Stephen F. Austin, Jalan West and Zeek Woodley from Northwestern State and Rashawn Thomas from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The preseason all-conference second team includes SFA sophomore guard Ty Charles, Southeastern Louisiana senior guard Zay Jackson, McNeese State senior post player Craig McFerrin, UIW senior forward Kyle Hittle and Houston Baptist senior guard Anthony Odunsi.
Last year, during Sam Houston's 26-9 campaign, Baxter averaged 27.2 minutes and 8.4 points per contest. He ranked second in assists for the team and scored in double figures 13 times.
The 2015-16 season begins Friday, Nov. 13 with conference play starting up Jan. 2. The 2016 Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament will be held March 9-12, at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, and will feature an eight-team single-elimination format.
