With less than 50 seconds remaining in the second overtime, Northwestern State soccer spoiled the conclusion of Sam Houston's road trip, as Esdeina Gonzalez fought off a Bearkat defender, eventually placing one in the back of the net for the 2-1 win.
Just three minutes after NSU (4-7-4 overall, 1-3-2 Southland) grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 61st minute, Sam Houston State's Allie Johnson stole the ball and raced down the center of the field, placing one in the back of the net to knot the match at 1-1.
The result moved the Bearkats to 7-5-1 overall and 4-2 in Southland Conference play and concludes the squad's three-game road trip, the longest since the team spent four consecutive away from Pritchett Field between Aug. 21-30.
Sam Houston logged 17 shots, including nine on goal, but could manage no more than Johnson's 64th minute finisher, her fourth of the season. Meanwhile, Bearkat senior goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton staved off 21 Demon shots, while recording seven saves.
The result put a damper on the Bearkats league-best road success, putting the squad at 5-2 away from the confines of Pritchett. The Kats were led by Johnson's five shots, including three on goal. Madison Cannon finished with three shots while Ashley Alonzo and Kylie Dick each took two.
The match ended a streak of allowing one goal or fewer for the Bearkats, who gave up three in a 3-1 loss at SMU on Sept. 11.
