TCU hands women 85-59 loss on road in opener

Led by All-Southland Conference guard Shernise Robertson, four Sam Houston players scored in double figures in an 85-59 loss to TCU in the season opening game for both women's basketball teams Friday night in Fort Worth.

Robertson totaled 13 points. Angela Beadle added 12 points and Kamry Orr and Laurynn McGowen each added 11 for the Bearkats. Saundra Guillory led Sam Houston with 13 rebounds.

Jada Butts led the Horned Frogs with a game-high 18 points. TCU opened the game with 11 straight points as Butts, senior Zahna Medley and sophomore AJ Alix hit three-point field goals in the opening three minutes of the game to help the Horned Frogs build the early double-digit lead.

The Frogs used three runs of at least 9-0 or better in the opening half to build a substantial cushion of 25 points at the break. The TCU defense was big in the opening stanza, limiting the Bearkats to just 16.7 percent shooting from the field.

Sam Houston bounced back after the intermission as both teams scored 22 points in the third period and the Frogs outscored the Kats by only one, 19-18 in the fourth.

The Bearkats' inside game showed promise as Sam Houston produced 34 points in the paint. Robertson was credited with four assists and McGowen added three.

Sam Houston continues its season-opening weekend road trip with a Sunday afternoon game in Fayetteville against the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.

The Kats' first home game will be Friday November 20 when Our Lady of the Lake visits Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum for the 11 a.m. annual “Pack the House” Game.
