Shernise Robertson scored 22 points and Angela Beadle added 12 point and 16 rebounds to lead Sam Houston to an 85-50 women's basketball non-conference victory over LSU-Alexandria at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Monday night.
Laurynn McGowen totaled 17 points for the Kats and Jasmine McCants added 12 off the bench. Pearl Paulo led the LSU-Alexandria with 16 points.
Sam Houston, now 2-2, struggled early in the game with the 0-8 Generals. The contest was tied five times and the lead changes six occasions during the first 20 minutes. The Bearkats led by only five points at intermission, 32-17.
But in the final half Sam Houston out-scored the visitors 53-23 as the Kats shot 58 percent from the field (20 of 34).
“The attention level wasn't there early in the game, but we came out charged up to open the second half,” Sam Houston head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols said. “We looked like a different team. Everybody got to play tonight. Going into some tougher games ahead, this was a good confidence builder for us.”
Sam Houston held the Generals to 21 per cent shooting (17 of 81) for the game. The Kats out-boarded LSU-Alexandria 64 to 41. Saundra Guillory added 10 rebounds and McCants pulled down eight boards.
“This team is getting better with every game,” Welch-Nichols said. “I'm proud of the way these kids are fighting every game.”
Sam Houston's 85 points were the most the women have scored in a game since defeating New Orleans on March 8, 2014.
