Women rack up road victory at Barclays Center

Playing in the Barclays Center on the home floor of the Brooklyn Nets Sunday afternoon, the Sam Houston women's basketball team picked up its first road victory since last January with a 63-56 win over LIU-Brooklyn.

The contest was part of a three-day stay in New York for the Bearkats who upped their record to 3-3 for the year. The Blackbirds dropped to 1-3 for the season.

The victory ups head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols' career victory total at Sam Houston to 101.

Seniors Angela Beadle and Shernise Robertson led the Kats with 17 points each. With the contest tied 51-51 with 5:40 to play, Beadle sank three lay-ups and a free throw during a 7-0 Bearkat run that put Sam Houston up by seven, 58-51.

Laurynn McGowen hit three free throws and Robertson swished in two more to hold onto the victory. During the final five minutes of the game, LIU-Brooklyn missed nine of its last 10 shots including five errant lay-up attempts and a three shots from beyond the arc.

Beadle led the Bearkats with eight rebounds. McGowen added five boards. Stylz Sanders led the Blackbirds with 10 points. Saundra Guillory led both teams with five assists.

The game was tied six times with 14 lead changes during the four periods.

LIU-Brooklyn led for most to the first half after jumping out to an 8-2 lead. Sam Houston battled back to take a 23-21 lead into the locker room at half time. The Blackbirds outscored the Kats 24-19 in the third period. A three-pointer by Robertson with six minutes to play put Sam Houston up 51-50 and the Kats never trailed again.

Next action for the Sam Houston women will be a road encounter with Texas Southern in Houston on Monday, December 14. The Kats return home to Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum to play host to the Rice Owls on Thursday, December 17. Tip is at 6:30 p.m.
