Box Score Hammond, La. – Jordyn Vaughn totaled 14 kills in 29 attempts to lead both squads as Sam Houston defeated 25-21 25-19 25-18 to pick up an important road victory over Southeastern Louisiana Thursday night.
The victory ended a two-game winning streak and helped the Bearkats in their quest to improve their seeding as one of the eight teams to qualify for the 2015 Southland Conference tournament in Conway, Arkansas in two weeks.
Sam Houston now stands 12-15 for the year and 6-7 in Southland play. Southeastern dropped to 11-16 for the season and 5-8 in league play.
Brooke White totaled eight kills and Taylor Cunningham added six. Michelle Griffin assisted on 32 of Sam Houston's 36 kills. The Lions posted 27 kills. Claire Kilpatrick led the defense with 16 digs. Both teams were credited with eight blocks.
With the score tied 13-13 in the first set, the Bearkats won five consecutive points on Shelby Genung's serve and coasted to a 25-21 first set win.
Southeastern Louisiana jumped out to a quick 8-6 lead in the second set. The Kats fought back to tie the set 14-14 then won three straight on Genung's serve to go up 18-14. The Lions cut the lead to one, 19-18, but a kill by Cunningham sparked a 5-1 run to put Sam Houston up two sets to none.
With the third set tied 4-4, the Kats took control and led the rest of the way to complete the road victory.
Sam Houston completes a four-match road swing Saturday afternoon with a contest versus New Orleans in the Crescent City. The Bearkats will complete the regular season with matches Thursday and Saturday with Southland Conference leader Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist, respectively.
