Men Produce Strong Performances at UH Ryan Indoor

A victory by junior Robert Monticone in the 800 meters highlighted action by the Sam Houston men's track and field team in the University of Houston's Howie Ryan Invitational indoor meet Friday and Saturday.
Monticone edged out Daniel Shelton of Houston Baptist with a time of 1:55.18, just 0.12 seconds ahead of the Huskies runner.
Sam Houston's 4x400 relay quartet of Jaylen Johnson, William Stark, Alex Gilreath and Rodney Jones placed third behind Stephen F. Austin and Texas-San Antonio with a season best mark of 3:18.52.
Gilreath finished fourth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.71.
Stark also posted times of 8.22 to place sixth in the 60 meter hurdles semifinals after a seventh place 8.28 in the event prelims.
Garrett Larson placed fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 16' 6.75”. Justin Jenkins finished fifth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.93 in the finals. The junior had the second best time in the 60m semifinals with a mark of 6.86 and posted a 6.85 time in the prelims.
Karl Schreiber was fourth in the mile run with a mark of 4:21.32.
The Bearkats continued to show improvement as they point towards the Southland Conference indoor championships in Birmingham in February as the men posted 20 seasons bests at the UH meet.
