Sam Houston women's bowling team defeated No. 15 Valparaiso in seven games to finish ninth at the Prairie View A&M Invitational.
The No. 5 ranked Bearkats defeated seven nationally-ranked opponents during the tournament which was held at the International Training and Research Center Arlington. Nine of the top 10 teams in the country participated in the tournament.
Sam Houston rallied from two games down to defeat Alabama State to open bracket play Sunday. The Bearkats fell behind after 180-160 and 193-189 losses, but bounced back for victories of 255-205, 191-158, 229-211 and 211-176.
The Kats went down to the wire to knock off Valparaiso in a thriller, winning 204-200, 152-180, 169-226, 195-182, 244-182, 172-200, 232-220.
"Game seven against Valparaiso came down to the girls throwing the last seven strikes against a stringing Valpo team that was equally striking in return," SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. "We ended up winning by 12 pins.
"Once we got back to the Baker format, the light switch got turned back and the intensity turned up. Time to get back to work."
Nebraska won the tournament with a 4-3 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in the top bracket match.
Arkansas State defeated Central Missouri for third place. Stephen F. Austin was the fifth place winner downing Vanderbilt. Maryland-Eastern Shore took seventh place with a victory over North Carolina A&T.
