The Sam Houston women's basketball team couldn't overcome a scoreless stretch that spanned more than eight minutes in the second half, as they lost 63-48 to Abilene Christian Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats (6-15, 5-7 SLC) couldn't mount a last-minute comeback like they did three weeks ago in Abilene. SHSU and ACU are tied with a 5-7 league record.
Sam Houston went cold for a large part of the second half. Taylor Dorsey hit a three-pointer to cut the ACU lead to 42-40 with 13:20 left in the game. The Bearkats would then go the next 8:11 without a basket as the Wildcats grew their lead to as much as 15 points.
Shernise Robinson finally broke the scoreless stretch with a jumper but the 13-0 run by Abilene Christian put the game out of reach.
Shadijah Moore made two free throws to give the Kats a 2-0 lead after neither team scored in the first two minutes of the game. ACU hit the first three-pointer of the night to take a 3-2 lead.
Five of the Wildcats' first eight made baskets were three-pointers as they led SHSU for most of the first half. ACU attempted 13 treys in the first period.
The Bearkats had a different approach, shooting just five three-pointers in the first half. Sam Houston was 9-of-22 shooting but managed to make 8-of-12 from the free-throw line. Abilene Christian was only 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.
