SHSU Women Runners-Up at Southland

Birmingham, Alabama – Paced by individual first places in the weight throw, 60 meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay, Sam Houston finished as the runner-up at the annual Southland Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship held Monday and Tuesday at the CrossPlex facility.
Stephen F. Austin won the championship with a point total of 132.5. The Bearkats placed second with 118 points followed by Lamar in third with 106 and Abilene Christian fourth with 69.
Ashley Jenkins took gold in the women's weight throw Monday with a school record throw of 62' 10”. Tuesday Danielle Demas was the event winner in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.30 seconds.
In Tuesday's final event, Camry Grigsby, Kodii Church, Ruth Amaku and Jordan Grady teamed to win the women's 4x400 meter relay with a clocking of 3:43.37. The mark stands as a Bearkat women's indoor school record.
Two Bearkat women finished as runners-up in their specialties. Paula Smith was second in the long jump with a leap of 19' 3.5” and Jordan Grady earned a silver medal in the 400 meter dash with a mark of 55.50.
Smith also placed third in the 60 meter dash (7.62) and fourth in the high jump (5' 4.25”). Kara Whitson was a third place finished in the pole vault, clearing 13' 0.75”. Winnie Ileso was third in the long jump (19' 0").
