CORPUS CHRISTI – A 19-0 run to close out the first half wasn't enough for the Bearkat women's basketball team as Sam Houston fell 60-52 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the American Bank Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Bearkats (6-20, 5-11 SLC) took a 30-23 into the halftime break after shutting out the Islanders for the final 8:45 of the first half. Over that span the Bearkats turned a 23-11 deficit into a 30-23 lead.

“I thought we had a great first half. We came out with more energy than we have all year,” said head coach Brenda Nichols. “When we needed shots to fall at the end, we just couldn't get anything to go in.”

But the Islanders flipped the script in the second half, outscoring the Kats 37-22 for the eight-point victory. With 10 minutes left to play, Jazmin Wiley hit a jumper with 10 minutes left to play to give the Kats a 39-37 lead. But the Islanders quickly extended the lead out to five, and the Kats never got it to a one-possession game after.

Sam Houston was led in scoring by Shernise Robertson who scored 19 points while Wiley added 11.

The Kats will be in action again on Thursday when they travel to Lamar.
