
Bearkat bowlers finish qualifying 2-5

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Mo. -- The Sam Houston State women's bowling team concluded the opening round of the NCAA Championship with a 2-5 record and will be the No. 7 seed heading into the double-elimination bracket round.
The Kats will face the No. 2-seeded Nebraska Cornhuskers, a rematch of last season's national championship match, which the Kats won in six games. The other two teams on the Kats half of the bracket are No. 3 Arkansas State and No. 6 Central Missouri. The first round will start at 3:30 p.m.
The day started for the Bearkats with a loss to SFA and they followed that up losing to FDU.

Game 6
No. 7 SFA 1059, SHSU 1000
Sam Houston State made a late charge in the opening match of the day, but fell short of Stephen F. Austin 1059-1000. The Lumberjacks, making their first trip to the NCAA Championships, opened strong and held on for the win.
Heather Penatzer rolled three strikes in frames seven through nine and finished with a team high 224. Janine Kuwahara closed out the 10th with three strikes and continued her strong play with a 216, her fifth game over 200 in six tries.
Game 7
No. 2 FDU 1050, SHSU 955
The Bearkats closed out the opening round of play with a 1050-955 loss to FDU. The second-seeded Knights stayed just ahead of the Kats all match, and SHSU was unable to string together strikes.
Stephanie Zavala, who had a good run in the middle frames with srikes from four to six, was the top scorer for the Kats with a 205. Janine Kuwahara was once again above to 200 chekcing in with a 201. Rebecca Pittser rolled a 199.
