Bearkats shut out Texas 5-0 in Austin

Out-playing the Longhorns in every phase of the game, Sam Houston extended its winning streak to six with a 5-0 shutout of Texas at historic Disch-Falk Field in Austin.

Alex Bisacca, in his first start as a Bearkat pitcher, and reliever Jordan Church allowed only three base runners in the first eight innings and combined to strike out seven of the 27 batters they faced. Sam Houston did not give up a walk until the final inning.

Meanwhile, led by first baseman Spence Rahm who went 3-for-4 at the plate, the Kats out-hit the Horns 12-3. Right fielder Travis Lee added two hits in the lead off position.

The victory lifts Sam Houston to 20-19 for the year. Texas, losers in 10 of their last 12 games, drop to 19-18.

Designated hitter Wyatt Powell brought in the first run of the game with a hard hit ball up the middle after first baseman Spence Rahm and third baseman Jake McWilliam had singled. The hit scored Winne and MacWilliam scored on a wild pitch to give Sam Houston a 2-0 lead in the fourth.

Left fielder Hayden Simerly started a three-run seventh inning with a two-out single. Rahm's double to right center scored Simerly and catcher Collin Yelich singled to bring in Simerly. A double by infielder Ryan Brinley extended the Bearkat lead to 5-0.

Church was credited with the win to up his record to 3-1. Bisacca faced 13 batters in his four innings of work, striking out three Longhorns. Church faced 16 batters and struck out four.

Next, Sam Houston State travels to face Abilene Christian in a three-game Southland Conference series that begins Friday evening.
