A run-scoring single by right fielder Brianna Barnhill accounted for the winning run as Abilene Christian edged Sam Houston 3-2 in the finale of a three-game Southland Conference softball series Saturday at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Sam Houston held a 1-0 lead going into the top of the seventh. But a one-out, two-run homer to center field by shortstop Peyton Hedrick put ACU in front 2-1.
Center field Jessica Slater led off the bottom of the seventh with a shot to left center the senior stretched into a triple. When the throw to third base was misplayed, Slater raced home to tie the contest 2-2 on the error.
After a scoreless eighth inning, pinch hitter Lakin Carpenter led off the ninth with a bunt single and, with two out, scored the winning run on Barnhill's single.
The only run in the first six innings came on a sacrifice fly to center field by first baseman Angelica Gonzales. The play scored pinch runner Ashley Kopps who ran for designated player Hillary Adams after a lead-off single. Kopps reached second on a passed ball and third on a bunt single by left fielder Jennie Kieval.
Sam Houston out-hit the Wildcats 8-7 but left 11 runners on base. Jordan Franks (4-6) was the losing pitcher in relief. Starter Meme Quinn threw six and a third innings. Julia Montoya (6-10) got the win for ACU pitching the final three innings.
Sam Houston dropped to 15-25 for the year and 5-14 in Southland play. Abilene Christian stands 10-31 for the season and 4-17 in league action.
