Cougars Shut Out Bearkats 3-0 Tuesday

Cougar pitcher David Longville limited Sam Houston to five hits as the University of Houston shut out the Bearkats 3-0 in a non-conference baseball contest Tuesday night at Cougar Field.

The Kats now stand 24-22 for the season while Houston upped its record to 30-15 for the year.

Third baseman Jake MacWilliam accounted for two of the Kats' hits to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Center fielder Colt Atwood added a double in the ninth inning and catcher Trevor Winne and designated hitter Wyatt Powell each produced a single.

Six pitchers took the mound for Sam Houston. Starter Alex Bisacca gave up only three hits in four-and-a-third innings while striking out five Cougars. Jordan Church, Hayden Nixon, Derrick Hadley, Reid Garrett and Ryan Brinley all saw action in relief. Bisacca now stands 5-2 for the year.

Longville struck out four of the 31 Sam Houston batters he faced. Right fielder Travis Lee was the only Bearkat to reach third base after getting to first on an error and advancing to third on Atwood's double with one out in the ninth.

Both teams went scoreless through the first four innings as the two teams combined to produce only three hits and five base runners.

Houston scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Catcher Ian Rice led off the inning with a base on balls. With two outs, second baseman Josh Vidales walked and first baseman Chris Iriart was hit by a pitch. Designated player Jacob Campbell's single through the left side scored both Rice and Vidales.

The Cougars added a third run in the seventh inning as Iriat and Campbell walked with two outs and left fielder Corey Julks singled to center field to score Iriart.

Houston totaled seven hits. The Bearkats left four runners on base while the Cougars stranded 11.

Sam Houston returns to Southland Conference action Friday at 6:30 p.m. when the Bearkats play host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first game of a Southland Conference weekend series at Don Sanders Stadium.
