Women win 7 events and team title at Rice

Both the Sam Houston State men's and women's track and field teams took the team titles at the 33rd annual Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice University in Houston Friday and Saturday.
The Bearkat women totaled 145 points to finish 27 points ahead of runner-up University of Houston. Rice was third with 112 points. Four other Southland Conference teams (McNeese State, Houston Baptist, Lamar and A&M-Corpus Christi) were in the 16-team field.
The SHSU women posted seven first place individual finishes.
Paul Smith earned two gold medals, winning the 100 meter dash with a mark of 11.85 seconds and taking the long jump title with a leap of 19' 2.75”.
Ashley Jenkins won the hammer Friday with a throw of 208' 10”. Jenkins broke her own Sam Houston school record with the mark. The previous school record was 199' 9" by Jenkins last spring.
Danielle Demas, last week's Southland Conference women's track “athlete of the week” won the 100 meter hurdles with a 13.38 clocking. The Bearkat women's 4x400 meter relay quartet of Camry Grigsby, Kodii Church, Ruth Amaku and Jordan Grady finished first with a mark of 3:45.83.
Kristine Hanks won the shot put with a toss of 48' 11.5”. Elizabeth Lyssy earned gold in the javelin for the second consecutive week with a performance of 134' 9”.
Other medalists for the SHSU women included Briana McCall with a runner-up finish in the 800 meters (2:10.94)and third place finishers Ruth Amaku in the 400 meter hurdles (1:00.03), Grigsby in the 800 meter run (2:11.29), Kara Whitson in the pole vault (12' 8.25”), Winnie Ileso in the long jump (19' 2.75”)and Demas, Elizabeth Ene, Ileson and Smith in the 4x100 meter relay (46.27).
