DeMarcus Gatlin of Sam Houston State is one of 10 league men's basketball student-athletes who have been honored by selection to the 2015 Academic All-Southland Conference team.
The award marks the second time Gatlin has been honored as Academic All-Southland. He was named to the 2012-13 team. Gatlin has compiled a 3.22 grade point average as a graduate student earning his Master's Degree in Instructional Leadership.
The 6-4 guard from Houston / Bush was the leading scorer for Sam Houston State on a Bearkat squad that rolled up 26 victories, the most wins in one season by an SHSU men's team in the university's 28 years of completion at the NCAA Division I level.
Returning from an injury red-shirt year in 2013-14, Gatlin was a difference maker who averaged 10.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. He earned third-team All-Southland Conference honors.
Gatlin helped lead Sam Houston to a runner-up finish during the Southland Conference regular season, a second consecutive trip to the Southland tournament finals in Katy and the Bearkats' second NCAA post-season event in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
The Academic All-Southland team is voted upon by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
