For the second week in a row a Sam Houston State Bearkat has earned Southland Conference track and field “Athlete of the Week” honors.
Ashley Jenkins has been named as the league's “Field Performer of the Week.”
Jenkins won the 33rd Annual Victor Lopez Bayou Classic women's hammer throw competition with the best toss in the Southland and one of the top 10 in the nation.
The Dallas, Texas (Hillcrest H.S.), native threw for 208 feet-10 inches to break the Sam Houston State women's school record by almost 10 feet. Jenkins helped the Bearkats win the women's team championship against a 20-team field that included four other Southland teams.
A week ago Danielle Demas earned Southland women's “Track Athlete-of-the-Week” for a record-breaking performance in the 100 meter hurdles at the Texas Relays.
The Sam Houston track and field team heads to Austin again for the Texas Invitational. The Bearkats' multi-event athletes will be participating in a decathlon and pentathlon events in San Angelo hosted by Angelo State.
