Jalin Barnes, a 6-1 185-pound combo guard from Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kansas, has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Sam Houston and play men's basketball for head coach Jason Hooten.
During his sophomore season in 2014-15, Barnes averaged 13.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.1 steals. He was named Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference honorable mention all-league.
“Jalin is a multi-talented combo guard that did a great job running the show for us this year,” Barton County Community College head coach Craig Fletchall said. “He was the captain of our 24-win team and provided great leadership for our young squad. He can score in a lot of ways. The Sam Houston fans will appreciate his athleticism and work ethic. We're excited Jalin is now a Bearkat.”
Fletchall also coached former Sam Houston basketball starter Wilder Auguste, a two-time All-Southland Conference performer for the Bearkats during the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
Barnes earned KJCCC “Player of the Week” honors in mid-season after scoring 25 points in a win over Seward County Community College and 22 in an upset of No. 12 ranked Hutchison Community College. Barnes directed a Barton County offense that total more than 100 points in both victories.
“Jalin is our final piece to the puzzle and last signing of the spring semester,” Hooten said. “We are very excited about what Jalin brings to our program. We really liked the fact that Jalin can play multiple positions and defend the way we want to defend here at Sam Houston. Jalin can be a very effective scorer with his strength and athleticism. Our depth could possibly be even better now than it has been the past couple of years.”
Sam Houston's other five signings for the 2015-16 season have been Torry Butler, a 6-5 forward from Three Rivers Community College; Jovante' Spivey, 6-0 170-pound guard from South Georgia State College; Andre Sands, 6-8 250-pound post player from Casper College in Casper, Wyoming; Marc Fortin, a 6-9 230-pound post from Cegep De Sainte-Foy in Quebec City in Canada and Ameer Jackson, a 6-4 guard from Dodge City Community College in Kansas.
Sam Houston has totaled 50 victories the past two seasons, advancing to the finals of the Southland Conference in Katy and earning an NCAA post-season berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament for consecutive years
