AUSTIN -- On the second day of the NCAA West Preliminaries, the Bearkats had two men's track and field athletes advance to Saturday's quarterfinals races. Matthew Viverette and Justin Jenkins will have a chance to advance to the NCAA Finals in Eugene Oregon in two weeks.
Viverette moved one step closer to advancing to the NCAA Finals on Friday, qualifying for Saturday's quarterfinals in the 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA Track and Field NCAA preliminaries at Mike A. Meyers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
Viverette qualified for the quarterfinals, finishing fourth in his heat with a time of 13.86. That mark was good enough to get an oppotunity to run on Saturday.
“I thought it was a pretty good time, but I just missed the automatic top three qualifiers,” Viverette said. “But to have to wait and watch the other races before you know for sure you are advancing made it that much sweeter.”
Viverette came back and ran in the 400-meter hurdles quarterfinal, finishing 19th overall, missing a top 12 mark and trip to Eugene by half a second.
Jenkins, who had already compete in the 100 meter quarterfinals where he just missed a berth in the NCAA Finals, came back to run the 16th fastest time in the 200 to qualify for Saturday's quarterfinals. Jenkins time of 20.90 was the fastest non-automatic qualifying time.
Also on Friday, Trevor Sealy threw a personal best in the hammer throw, tossing it 205 feet, 8 inches. His throw placed him 15th, missing a trip to the NCAA finals by less than three feet.
William Stark, was also running the in 110 hurdles, finishing 41st with a time of 14.37.
In the men's 100 meter dash, Jenkins followed up Thursday's school record with another fast time, clocking in at 10.26. He finished 14th, missing a trip to Eugene, Oregon by .08 seconds.
In addition to the Bearkat athletes running in the quarterfianls, one more will have a shot at advancing in field events. Garrett Larson will compete in the pole vault. Also on the track the men's 4x100-meter relay team will run for a chance to advance to Eugene.
