Danielle Demas kept her hopes for a berth in the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, alive with a record-breaking performance in Austin Friday.
Demas broke her own Sam Houston school record in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.02. She set the record with a 13.03 in the Southland prelims three weeks ago.
Finishing fourth in the opening round Thursday, Demas can clinch her trip to Oregon by placing in the top 12 in Saturday night's quarterfinal race.
“To hit a hurdle like she did and still run a school record time shows just how good of a race she had,” head coach Dave Self said. “She has put herself in position to advance to Eugene and that's what we are looking for.”
Sam Houston's Ashley Jenkins already has earned a trip to the Northwest. The Southland Conference hammer champion placed 11th Thursday with a hammer throw of 202 feet, nine inches.
Kara Whitson finished 24th in the pole vault Friday with a mark of 13 feet, one inch. Adrienne Quillin missed finishing among the top 12 by a little under two feet in Thursday's hammer competition with a throw of 200 feet, 11 inches.
In other action Thursday Ruth Amaku placed 35th in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.31, Paul Smith was 41st in the 100 meter dash with a clocking of 11.71 and Jordan Grady was 45th in the 400 meter dash with a mark of 55.49.
To advance to the national meet, athletes must finish among the top 12 in their event. The top 12 relay teams advance as well. To reach the quarterfinals, athletes must finish in the top 24 of the first round competition.
