AUSTIN – Sam Houston State sprinter Danielle Demas knew if she just took care of business in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles she would be advancing to Eugene Oregon.
That is exactly what she did, running a 13.15 in her heat to tie for first, and will take the third-fastest time in the West Preliminaries to the NCAA Finals.
“I was just not trying to overthink the race today,” Demas said. “I knew what I needed to do today and I think I did that. I'm just really excited because I raced really hard to get here.”
After hitting a hurdle and stumbling on Friday on her way to a school record time of 13.02, Demas ran Saturday's race a little more cautious.
“Today I didn't run as fast as I think I could have, because I was trying to play it safe and not fall again like I almost did yesterday,” she said. “So I just ran my own race and stayed controlled.”
Also on Saturday, Elizabeth Lyssy finished 40th in the javelin throw with a toss of 139-11. Kristine Hanks was 42nd in the shot put with a 46-2 mark.
The 400-meter relay teams finished in 15th with a time of 44.98. They missed out on advancing to Eugene by .17 seconds. The 1,600-meter relay team finished 20th with a time of 3:38.99, nearly three seconds off the qualifying mark.
The NCAA Championship will be held at historic Heyward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon June 10-13.
