Women Off To Strong Start At Southland

Hammond, La. – Ashley Jenkins and Adrienne Quillin finished first and second in the hammer, Kara Whitson was the runner-up in the pole vault and Elizabeth Lyssy was third in the javelin to get the 2015 Southland Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships off to a good start for Sam Houston.
The Bearkats are the defending Southland outdoor champions and lead the 2015 event after the first day with 44 points. Northwestern State is currently in second place with 32.5 points followed closely by Stephen F. Austin 28 and McNeese State 27.
In other action for the Sam Houston, Avery Zamzow and Nicole Jenrette stand second and third, respectively, halfway through the heptathlon competition.
Jenkins tossed the hammer 204 feet, 10.50 inches, short of her school record set at the Rice Victor Lopez meet in April but her second best mark of the spring. Quillin threw 197 feet, 10.75 inches to pick up more points for the Kats. The toss was a season best for her.
Whitson cleared a season best height of 13 feet, 8.25 inches on her next to last attempt of the day to nail down her second place medal in the pole vault. Ashley Thompson placed fifth with a vault of 13 feet, 1.75 inches. Monica McClelland was ninth with a mark of 11 feet, 5.75 inches.
Lyssy hurled the javelin 148 feet, 0.75 inches for her third place medal, her second best throw of the year as well.
Paula Smith and Olivia Olguin also scored points for the Kat women. Smith placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet four inches. Olguin was sixth in the 10,000 meter run.
Zamzow and Jenrette rank second and third halfway through the heptathlon with respective point totals of 3,123 and 3,087. Farydah Inoussa of New Orleans leads at the midway point with 3,128 points.
Jenrette won the heptathlon high jump and was second in the event's shot put. Zamzow was the top performer in the 200 meter dash and was third in the 100 meter hurdles.
