
Women place eight in running event finals

Eight Sam Houston runners qualified for Sunday's finals Saturday at the Southland Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Hammond, La.
The Bearkats, defending Southland women's outdoor champions, lead the two-day team standings with 72 points. Northwestern State is in second place with 59 points followed by Stephen F. Austin with 56.
Danielle Demas and Jordan Grady earned their spots in the finals by posting the top times in their events. Demas broke her own school record with a 13.03 performance in the 100 meter hurdles. The time ranks 7th nationally in NCAA women's track and field. Grady led all participants in the 400 meters with a time of 54.50.
Paula Smith, Briana McCall and Ruth Amaku produced the second best times in their events. Smith ran a 24.16 in the 200 meters. McCall posted a 2:12.33 in the 800 meters. Amaku was clocked in 1:00.86 in the 400 meter hurdles.
Smith also qualified in the 100 meters with a time of 11.87. Camry Grigsby was the third place finished in the 800 meter prelims with a mark of 2:12.73.
In other events, Nicole Jenrette finished second in the heptathlon with 5,017 points and Avery Zamzow placed third with 4,956 points. Kaylynne Wright was third in the triple jump with a mark of 40 feet, two inches
Kristine Hanks and Ashley Jenkins both scored in the shot put. Hanks placed third with distance of 49 feet, 5.75 inches. Jenkins was seventh with a mark of 45 feet, 7.25 inches.
Friday three Bearkat women posted medal-winning performances. Ashley Jenkins and Adrienne Quillin finished first and second in the hammer. Jenkins tossed the hammer 204 feet, 10.50 inches while Quillin threw 197 feet, 10.75 inches.
Kara Whitson was the runner-up in the pole vault with a season best height of 13 feet 8.25 inches. Elizabeth Lyssy was third in the javelin with a distance of 148 feet 0.75 inches, her second longest mark of the season.
Three other Sam Houston women scored points Friday. Paula Smith was fourth in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, four inches. Olivia Olguin placed sixth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 38:19.76. Ashley Thompson was fifth in the pole vault with a season best height of 13 feet 1.75 inches..
