HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State relief pitcher Alex Bisacca was named to the 2015 Southland Conference Baseball All-Academic Second Team, following his spectacular season on and off the diamond, the league office announced Wednesday.
The Plano native posted a 3.29 GPA in kinesiology while notching equally impressive marks on the mound, finishing his senior season with a 7-2 record and 2.35 ERA.
“It's a great distinction for Alex to be honored for not only his baseball accomplishments but academic accomplishments as well,” first-year head coach Matt Deggs said. “Alex got it done in the classroom and on the field. We're super proud of him.”
The accolade is the latest in a whirlwind week for Bisacca who six days ago was selected in the 35th round of the MLB Draft by the New York Yankees. The right-hander led the squad in wins, appearances (28) and saves (4). In 69 innings, Bisacca struck out 57 hitters, holding opponents to a .206 batting average.
For Deggs, the accolade is a testament to the type of player the Bearkats seek to develop.
“We're not only trying to develop good baseball players but more importantly we're looking to develop well-rounded student athletes,” Deggs said. “They aren't just going to be great fathers and leaders but can go on to corporate America and be successful. In addition to Alex, I thought there were three to four other guys who were worthy of that distinction as well.”
Bisacca spent two seasons with the Kats after transferring from Paris Junior College prior to the 2014 season. He finishes his career with an 8-2 record and 2.17 ERA in 74 2-3 innings.
Sam Houston reached the finals of the 2015 Southland Conference baseball tournament in Sugar Land in May. The performance marked the Kats' sixth appearance in the league championship game in 14 trips to the post-season event.
The Academic All-Southland team is voted upon by the league's head baseball coaches, academic advisors and sports information directors. To be eligible for nomination, a student-athlete must be in his second season of play in the league, be a starter or front line reserve and have produced a 3.0 overall grade point average or higher.
