Trio of SHSU tracksters take all-academic honors

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State men's track and field squad placed three members on the 2015 Southland Conference Cross Country and Track and Field All-Academic Team, trailing only Abilene Christian's four honorees, the league office announced on Thursday.
Junior Evan Arambula, senior Karl Schreiber and senior Patrick Pitts were announced as the Bearkat honorees, each meeting the criteria of earning at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA, completing one full academic year at Sam Houston and competing in 50 percent or more of the squad's meets.
The selection was the Schreiber's third in as many years. The Rostock, Germany, native posted a 3.87 GPA in mass communication while notching a 36th place finish and time of 16:46.65 in the 5,000-meter run at the league's outdoor championship.
Meanwhile, Arambula and Pitts made their first appearance on the 29-member list. Arambula, a Eustice native, earned a 3.63 GPA in management while Pitts, a product of East Bernard, posted a 3.25 GPA in human resources.
On the track, Arambula took fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the outdoor championship. At the Victor Lopez Classic in April, the Eustace High School product captured a personal-best 9:14.77 in a first place finish in the steeple.
Pitts, a fellow steeplechase competitor, took third in the event at the outdoor championship with a personal-best 9:18.74. The East Barnard High School product earned a second place finish in the steeple at the Texas Invitational with a mark of 9:39.11.
The Sam Houston men finished the outdoor season in second place at the Southland championship, their third straight top three finish in the event. The squad's 139.5 points at the outdoor championship were the most since the unit tallied 169 in 2006.
