Demas wraps up season at USA Outdoors

Sam Houston State's Danielle Demas shut the door on a decorated junior season, posting a time of 13.29 in the 100-meter hurdles to take 19th overall at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships from the renowned Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., on Friday evening.
Lining up against the world's best, Demas placed sixth among collegiate competitors, with Kentucky, Florida, Notre Dame, Texas and Oregon representing the top five schools. Other entrants contended on behalf of Asics, Nike and Adidas.
“Danielle started to break through last year,” sixth-year head coach David Self said. “Towards the end of last year, she really started to push at the level Sabrina (Starr) was at. I think that steamrolled with Sabrina graduating and now all eyes are on Danielle so to speak.”
The trip to proclaimed Track Town, USA was the second in the month of June for the Houston native. Demas finished 10th at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, behind a wind-aided 13.05 mark en route to earning second-team All-American status on June 11.
The Cypress Creek High School product will enter her senior season this fall as the school-record holder in the event after posting a blazing 13.03 mark at the 2015 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
“She had a fantastic indoor season and never slowed down or looked back,” Self said. “For her to do the things she did at the conference, preliminaries, NCAA finals and now the USA Outdoors shows she's ready compete on another level. I think this year was a great experience for her.”
Fellow Bearkats Tyler Adams and Aaron Akens also competed over the weekend at the USA Track & Field Junior Championships, held in conjunction with the senior event.
Adams leapt 6 feet, 10 ¼ inches in the high jump, taking eighth overall and fifth among collegiate competitors while Akens placed ninth in the discus throw and fourth among collegiate competitors with a toss of 168 feet, two inches.
“We had Tyler and Aaron competing in the juniors on top of three athletes at the final round NCAA level this year,” Self said. “We're really moving from the regional scene to the national scene. A lot more people are recognizing the 'SH' logo. It really shows you that Sam Houston is a name to be reckoned with in our sport.”
