Sixteen former Sam Houston State baseball players are currently playing in the professional ranks. Each week during the summer, we take a look back at how these Pro Kats fared. Below is a look at how each player is performing through July 20.
Alex Bisacca | Gulf Coast League Yankees (Rookie Ball) | New York Yankees
The Yankees' 35th-round selection made his third professional appearance on Saturday, allowing just one hit while striking out two during two innings of work. The righty has yet to yield an earned run during his 3 2-3 innings of pro ball.
Logan Boyd | Lowell Spinners (Class-A Short Season) | Boston Red Sox
After a pair of rocky starts to begin his pro career, Boyd, a 19th-round selection by the Boston Red Sox in June, allowed just one hit in 1 2-3 innings while striking out four and walking one on Thursday.
Ryan Brinley | Auburn Doubledays (Class-A Short Season) | Washington Nationals
The Nationals' 27th-round pick notched three appearances over the past week, holding opponents to just one hit in three innings, striking out two and not allowing a walk. After making his first two professional starts with the Gulf Coast League Nationals, Brinley moved up to Auburn where he has since tossed 7 1-3 innings without surrendering an earned run and has allowed only one walk while fanning five.
Carter Burgess | Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A) | Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays' 2014 Round 28 selection went 2-for-2 and scored one run on Friday before drawing a pair of walks on Saturday. In 17 games with Bowling Green, Burgess is hitting .250 with one RBI and eight walks.
Cody Dickson | Bradenton Marauders (Class-A Advanced) | Pittsburgh Pirates
The 2013 Round 4 selection by the Pirates earned the win on Wednesday, tossing five innings, allowing just three hits and one run while fanning five and walking one. The start was Dickson's second straight limiting opponents to just one earned run. On the season, the lefty is 8-5 with a 3.98 ERA in 18 starts.
Tyler Eppler | Bradenton Marauders (Class-A Advanced) | Pittsburgh Pirates
The sixth-round 2014 Pirates' selection last pitched on July 12 but has been dominant in six starts with the Marauders. Eppler (1-1) boasts a 3.90 ERA in 27 2-3 innings this season while holding a 2.90 ERA in 20 starts during his career.
Dallas Gallant | Fort Myers Miracle (Class-A Advanced) | Minnesota Twins
The Twins' 23rd selection in 2013 allowed one run on one hit in 1 1-3 innings on Saturday, snapping a five-game streak of holding opponents scoreless. The appearance was the sixth with Fort Myers Miracle since beginning his rehab stint (injured finger). Over the six outings, Gallant has tossed 6 2-3 innings, allowing four hits and just one run while striking out seven and walking three.
Andrew Godail | Williamsport Crosscutters (Class-A Short Season) | Philadelphia Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies 2015 26th-round selection allowed a pair of walks and a hit but held Mahoning Valley scoreless in 1 1-3 innings on Saturday. Over seven appearances, the lefty holds a 2.25 ERA, allowing five hits and two earned runs in eight innings, striking out seven and walking nine.
Dustin Martin | Toros de Tijuana (Triple-A Mexican League) | MLB affiliate
The 26th-round pick by the Twins in 2006 has posted tremendous success since joining the Mexican League, pushing his hit streak to six in a 3-for-7 performance over the weekend. Martin hit .310 in 18 games (22-for-71) for the Tigres de Quintana Roo and is off to a nice start in four games with the Toros, hitting .357 (5-for-15) including five runs and three RBIs.
Ryan O'Hearn | Wilmington Blue Rocks (Class-A Advanced) | Kansas City Royals
After raking in a South Atlantic League-leading 19 home runs and 56 RBIs with the Lexington Legends, O'Hearn was promoted to Wilmington, where he made his debut over the weekend. The 2014 eighth-round pick by the Royals went 1-for-4 in Friday's debut, driving in one run. O'Hearn also made his debut on MLB.com's 2015 Prospects Watch List for the Royals at No. 15.
Nolan Riggs | Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Class-A Short Season) | San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants pick up from a season ago has kept batters fooled at the plate. In 24 innings of work over his last six games, the righty has posted a 1.88 ERA, striking out 20 and walking eight. On Thursday, Riggs allowed nine hits and four earned runs in 2 1-3 innings.
Matt Shelton | Great Lakes Loons (Class-A) | Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers' 2011 24th-round pick was roughed up in his last start, allowing seven hits and five runs while walking five in six innings on Wednesday. The righty has posted a 5.93 ERA in 27 1-3 innings with Great Lakes and owns a 3.31 ERA for his minor league career.
Caleb Smith | Trenton Thunder (Double-A) | New York Yankees
The 14th-round 2013 Yankees' selection tossed four innings on Sunday, drawing the loss after allowing eight hits and four runs. The loss snapped a streak of four straight wins for the lefty, who owns a 3.63 ERA over his last 10 starts, which spans 57 innings.
Ryan Tepera | Toronto Blue Jays
Making his first relief appearance since the All-Star break, Tepera allowed two hits and one run in 1 1-3 innings against Tampa Bay. Over his last 10 games (10 1-3 innings) the right-hander has posted a 1.74 ERA while striking out six. In 17 games with the Blue Jays this season, Tepera owns a 2.87 ERA in 18 2-3 innings.
Corey Toups | Lexington Legends (Class-A) | Kansas City Royals
While O'Hearn garnered much of the attention with the Legends, Toups, the Royals' 15th-round selection, has caught fire in Lexington, raising his batting average to .300 (87-for-290) after posting a pair of three-hit games over the weekend. The Woodlands product ranks third in the South Atlantic League in runs (59), tied for sixth in stolen bases (26), tied for eighth in doubles (21) and 11th in total bases (121).
Collin Yelich | Gulf Coast League Braves (Rookie Ball) | Atlanta Braves
The Braves' 29th-round selection has made 14 appearances, including nine starts behind the plate, hitting .261 (6-for-23) in that timespan. On Tuesday, Yelich went 1-for-3 at the plate and drew a walk.
